THE PEDAGOGY OF DYSCALCULIA EXAMINATION

The research project “Measuring Cognitive Abilities in the Light of Affective Factors – Pedagogical Examination of Dyscalculia” is carried out at Eötvös Loránd University (2022-2023).

IDENTIFYING THE SOCIAL PROBLEM

The problem of mathematics learning is affecting more and more students in Hungary and abroad. The work of Judit Dékány and the Dyscalculia Research Group is the Pedagogical Examination of Dyscalculia (DPV) test battery, which helps to identify the problems. It is a unique criterion-oriented test battery in Hungary and internationally, which aims to measurably differentiate between mathematical underachievement caused by inadequate instruction or environmental disadvantage, and the severity of mathematics learning difficulties and developmental dyscalculia as a specific learning disorder. The DPV is a differential diagnostic assessment procedure that can be used to assess kindergarten through grade 12 and adults, which can also be used for follow-up assessments, and is aligned with the requirements of the National Core Curriculum.

EXPECTED SOCIAL/ECONOMIC/ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF THE RESEARCH

The DPV is a social innovation, a niche internationally and nationally in the diagnosis of learning problems in mathematics. The earlier the problem is professionally identified (early childhood), the earlier the intervention. Test-taking provides teachers with a measure that clearly indicates the problem and thus offers a solution for the application of appropriate therapeutic procedures.

It can also measure its social utility, because early intervention reduces early school drop-out, the need for much more costly therapies later on, and does not limit the possibility of taking up different jobs. The project is an innovation in the differential diagnosis of learning disabilities in mathematics that is unique internationally and the results can be incorporated into new pedagogical methodology.
